Squash rackets are all set to start smashing this coming November as six African countries compete for glory at the inaugural Lagos Governor Open Squash Championship. Per reports, the participating countries include Zambia, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Egypt.

The tournament will take place on November 22, 2009. The prize money has been set to 10 million Nigerian Naira or $65,000. This is considered a high profile squash tournament that may soon be entered the season calendar next year.

Main Organizing Committee chairman Deji Wellington revealed that they have lined up a lot of programs in anticipation of this prestigious event. He added that the event has gotten the approval of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.

Wellington said that the governor himself wanted to see a world-class squash event to take place in Lagos that would attract the world’s best players to compete and achieve glory for their respective countries.

The organizers initially thought of including the governor’s surname in the tournament name. However, it was Fashola himself who declined this plan and stated that it should only be named the Governor Cup.

As for the venues of the tournament, the organizers are still determining as to which to choose. They revealed that they are currently selecting five major venues such as the National Stadium, Rowe Park squash courts, Ikeja Country Club, Ikoyi Club and Teslim Balogun Stadium.
