Mobile operators in the US have reason to be happy following an encouraging address by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski at the CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment Show in San Diego.

During his keynote address, the chairman strongly expressed his faith in mobile internet and claimed that mobile technology is going to play a significant role in America’s economic growth in the near future. He called for support from mobile broadband and fixed-line operators alike to help drive the economy forward in order to make the US the leader in internet communication systems. He recalled how mobile broadband has evolved over the years from being a revolutionary new idea into a necessary tool for both individuals and corporate houses.

Speaking about the issues that are causing concern in the mobile broadband industry, the FCC chairman announced increased broadcast spectrum to facilitate faster and more expansive growth of networks.

On the contentious issue of net neutrality, the chairman chose to soothe operators by taking a soft line approach. He said in this regard that he well understood the inherent distinctions in the method of operation followed for fixed line and wireless broadband, and held that regulations ought to be made keeping in mind the unique needs of each.
